Three common factors that affect the service life of spherical roller bearings

Jul 28, 2022

There are many factors that can affect the service life of spherical roller bearings, and this article describes three common factors.

1. Excessive oil in the bearing and tank can lead to bearing damage and the correct way to refuel.
Excessive oil in the spherical roller bearings and the box will cause the spherical roller bearing rolling elements to slip, causing the rollers to change from rolling friction to sliding friction, and damage the spherical roller bearing rolling elements. Due to the excessive amount of oil in the spherical roller bearing, the free space inside the spherical roller bearing box becomes smaller, which leads to an increase in the operating temperature of the spherical roller bearing and a decrease in the degree of grease. The lubricating oil film of the rolling element becomes thinner and the lubrication conditions become worse; It is easy to cause heterophony of the spherical roller bearing, the surface is slipped, and shorten the service life of the spherical roller bearing.
Generally, the bearing oil chamber with a spherical roller is provided on the side of the end cover (except for the design of double-sealed spherical roller bearings), and the oil injection volume of the spherical roller bearing chamber can be carried out with reference to the following standards: when the speed < 1500r/min, the oil injection amount is 2/3 of the oil chamber volume of the spherical roller bearing. When the speed is between 1500 and 3000r/min, the oil injection amount is 1/2 of the oil chamber volume of the spherical roller bearing. When the speed > 3000r/min, the oil injection amount should be less than or equal to 1/3 of the oil chamber volume of the spherical roller bearing.

In the actual working process, for high temperature and high speed operation of the spherical roller bearings, should be used as little as possible with a spherical roller bearing with sealing surface, increase the oil storage capacity of the oil cover, and install a fuel nozzle, which can improve the sercive life of the spherical roller bearing.

2. Intrusion of foreign objects can easily cause bearing failure.
Intrusion of foreign objects can easily cause bearing failure. For example, when installing a spherical roller bearing, the staff adopts the copper rod knock-in method. This method is easy to cause uneven axial force on the spherical roller bearing, causing cage deformation, rolling element damage, and increased clearance. In addition, during the knocking process of the copper rod, the copper end flies into the spherical roller bearing cage, which is easy to cause the spherical roller bearing failure. Therefore, when installing the spherical roller bearing, try to use special tools, and try to avoid using things such as cloth and short fibers, so as to avoid unnecessary damage caused by fine fibers entering the self-aligning roller bearing.

3. Improper installation can cause bearing failure.
Installation of spherical roller bearings should follow its installation steps, do not savage installation and removal. Whether the spherical roller bearing is properly installed is related to the service life of the spherical roller bearing, so we must pay attention to it. Avoid holding it directly by hand when installing the spherical roller bearing, because the sweat on the hand may also cause rust. Don't ignore the small details. When installing the spherical roller bearing, the most important thing is to not allow strong stamping, and it is not allowed to directly hit the spherical roller bearing with a hammer. It is not for fear of smashing the bearing, but for fear of deformed  of the bearing due to hit, because the deformed spherical roller bearing cannot be used. Also, it is not allowed to transmit pressure through the rolling elements. Ensure that the spherical roller bearing is properly stressed and avoid overpressure and overload.

Recommendation: There may be many factors that affect the service life of spherical roller bearings, and this article only introduces three common factors to check. When purchasing spherical roller bearings, we should choose the appropriate type according to our needs, and the fatigue-damaged spherical roller bearings should also be replaced in time.
